Current Work
An Artist's Diary
My current work embodies an evolution of my artist style. Since 2016, I have been focusing on stylized versions of realistic images, combined with lines, patterns, and shapes. For certain bodies of work, I chose to add abstract images to the composition. However, they never stood alone.. My abstractions were always accompanied by representational images.
My departure from representational images began over the past year. I had been incorporating dots into every background of my work. I started to realize just how powerful the dots had become. Visually, I became more interested in these patterns than in the other aspects of my work. I began to experiment with making dots my main focus, abandoning stylized realism.
As this process continued, I harkened back to my first solo show, in which I echoed my feelings on the canvas. I decided to bring back that introspection as my inspiration for each new abstract piece. The first painting using this process is called, “Shortness of Breath.” I used the intensity of the colors, combined with chaotic patterns, abstract shapes, and a dynamic composition to reveal how distressed I felt, upon getting the news that both my cat and my father had received a diagnosis of congestive heart failure. Continuing in this manner, I created paintings that mirrored a wide range of emotions, some of which include confusion, anger and powerlessness, as well as feelings of strength, peace, and happiness. As one of my abstract elements, I find the process of making the dots to be meditative. This body of work has really helped me to appreciate all of my experiences, no matter if they are good or bad.
