Yellow Bird

In these self-portraits, I use bold colors combined with strong contrast and patterns. The inspiration for this body of work began as I got engaged to get married in January of 2019 and wanted to create a body of work that reflected the joy and the happiness of my emotions. I use bright and colorful shades in the background and I create a visual texture with dots. I use myself to represent a feeling of mother nature and some plant life to represent and honor the creation of the natural world. The yellow bird in each painting symbolizes my goals, aspirations and hopes for the future and having a sunny outlook on life. I also use formal aesthetic concerns to drive my decisions in regard to color and composition.

Animals
The inspiration for this body of work was my reflection on the foster care system and its process. As an early childhood teacher for over twenty years, I wanted to create a body of work to send love towards all of those children that are wishing for their forever family. In each painting I include the sun, moon, or stars to honor the creation of the natural world. I also use aesthetic concerns to drive my decisions in regard to colors and combination layout. I additionally have an attachment to the animal being inside of a circle. The circle represents things that have no beginning and no end. That endless loop of birth, reincarnation , time, and seasons. The circle also represents my commitment as a person to help children heal and feel love.
